Banking Operations Slowed As Employees Meet With Their Bargaining Agents On The Proposed Legislation

The attorney general is quite satisfied that the amendments currently before Parliament are necessary, based on the situation in the country.

He expressed the view Monday, after a number of employees from the country’s banking fraternity gathered at the ABWU headquarters for an update on certain amendments within the new Banking Act.

The Hon. Steadroy Benjamin adds that he met with Deputy Secretary General Chester Hughes and members of the bank on Friday.

He says that during discussions, it became clear to him that the amendments were in order since, under the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Code, the method of calculation for severance pay is clearly established.

The attorney general says he is prepared to allow the present debate to continue in the Senate…and return to parliament within a matter of weeks to make further adjustments.
