police_693855074The main opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has criticised the Portia Simpson Miller administration over its handling of the crime situation in Jamaica as the island recorded yet another increase in murders. Opposition spokesman on National Security, Delroy Chuck, wants the government to take decisive action to deal with the situation. “There’s no doubt that the past three months have shown that we do not have crime and murders under control and I am very disappointed that we have not heard from the Minister of National Security or the Prime minister as to what plans, programmes, policies and support they have to provide the police with the necessary resources and instructions to stem the rising murders violent crime in the country,” he said. “When this problem arose under the Jamaica Labour Party government, we enacted six crime bills and that undoubtedly assisted in bringing down crime. From 2010 up to 2012, there was a decline in criminal activity, in particular murders. “The government refused to renew any of these six crime bills and what we have seen is, for the past three months at least, not only an escalation in serious crimes but murders in particular,” he added.
