NASSAU, Bahamas, Aug 16, CMC – The Bahamas government says it has been warned by law enforcement authorities in the United States of a “specific threat” against its Consulate in Miami.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell said that the threat comes in the wake of demonstrations in Florida against The Bahamas over Cuban detainees.

“Bahamians in Miami are further advised to exercise reasonable caution during this period in Miami.

The Bahamas has filed a formal note with the United States’ State Department over these matters. Additional measures are also being taken with regard to the security of all Bahamian interests in the South Florida area given this latest information,” Mitchell said, adding that the Consulate remains open for business.

Mitchell said that the United States Diplomatic Protection Service said that the threat was made “by a specific individual on Facebook against the Consulate in Miami which has necessitated additional layers of security at the consulate”.

Earlier this month, the Perry Christie government said it does not condone, incite or support cruel and inhumane treatment of people and that it is working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in processing asylum seekers.
