The effort to eradicate the Giant African snail is being ramped up.

Cabinet’s approval of a four-year project in this area will provide funds to fight the spread of the pest throughout the island.

Chief Plant Protection Officer Dr. Janelle Gore-Francis says plans are being finalized.

Extension Officer and Parasitologist, Onecia Martin notes the project is to ensure the eradication of the snails which have wreaked havoc on several farms…

Meanwhile, even as the snails are despised in this country, they are prized in at least one African country.
In Nigeria, the snails are used for their nutritional and cosmetic benefit.
Some entrepreneurs have even sought to export the molluscs as we hear in this report from Ciara Lee of Reuters news agency.
