A Former Cop Awaits The Jury’s Verdict In An Extortion Case At The High Court
A former cop will know his fate in a High Court matter today (Wednesday)
Jurors are expected to return a verdict against Joseph Peters, who is charged with Demanding with Menaces after being accused of participating in a plot to extort a businessman in 2015.
On Tuesday, Peters in an unsworn statement maintained he was innocent of the charge against him.
The defendant, who chose not to go into details, asked the jury to rely on recorded information he gave to police when he was arrested for the offence in 2015.
The defense, via a witness, also provided bank records related to a loan the defendant received to finance the construction of his home.
During closing arguments, Prosecutor Adlai Smith told jurors it did not matter whether the defendant gained anything from the scam once it is proven he participated.
Smith argued Peters concocted stories during his police interview to try to justify why he was dressed in uniform though he was not on active duty.
Prosecutors claimed the officer used his position to intimidate the businessman into paying money to avoid prosecution after accusing him of having sex with a minor.
Jurors will deliberate on the evidence after the judge presents a summary of the case this morning (Wednesday).
