Appeal for Greater Solidarity with Cubans

The Antigua Cuba Friendship Association is calling on a more strident show of strength from Caribbean nationals for Cubans living in Cuba.

Founding member, Dr. James Knight, says more public support from ordinary citizens in Antigua & Barbuda and across the region is needed. He is especially calling on alumni of learning institutions in Cuba and those who have benefited from Cuba’s eye-care programme administered locally.

He believes regional leaders would have benefited from protests in St. Kitts and across CARICOM ahead of the meetings with U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on Wednesday in Basseterre. Dr. Knight says political leaders act on the will of the people but, in this case, there was no evidence of that will regarding the plight Cubans are now facing. That plight now seeing the worsening effects of a decades-long economic blockade and, most recently, a blockade on oil supplies to the island.
