BAR ASSOCIATION WANTS PRIME MINISTERS MOTTLEY AND GONSALVES TO WALK BACK COMMENTS ON JUDICIARY

The Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association has joined in condemning recent remarks from Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Mottley and St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, targeting the judiciary in the region.
Both prime ministers were lamenting the crime scourge at a recent symposium in Trinidad, where they criticised judges for granting bail for murder.
Dr Gonsalves characterised “too many” judges and magistrates as being “too soft”.
President of the Bar Association, Cherissa Roberts Thomas, is standing in solidarity with the OECS Bar Association and others who have raised concerns about the comments.
She insists the independence of the judiciary, in line with the separation of powers, must be safeguarded.
Roberts Thomas wants the two leaders to walk back the comments.
