Electors in St Phillip’s North will go the polls on March 16 to choose a new Member of Parliament, following the resignation of long-serving Member of Parliament, Sir Robin Yearwood. Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne has written to Governor General Sir Rodney Williams requiring that the Writ of Election be issued today.

Nomination Day has been scheduled for February 25, ahead of polling day in the constituency on March 16.

Sir Robin resigned on Wednesday, 50 years to the day when he was first elected to the seat. Sir Robin won 11 consecutive elections. Randy Baltimore will be the standard-bearer for the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party, while Senator Alex Browne will contest the seat for the United Progressive Party. Browne will be required to resign from the Senate ahead of the by-election.

The Constitution stipulates that a by-election be held within 120 days to fill such a vacancy.
