The new secondary school at Potters has been named.
The institution will be called the Sir Novelle Richards Academy, named after an outstanding son of the soil.
Cabinet made the final selection at its meeting on Wednesday from a short list of names that were presented by a committee of various stakeholders including a member of the Potters community.
Minister of Education, Michael Browne, speaking to ABS News last night says he was pleased, noting that the completion of the institution might have very well set a new standard for construction work in Antigua and Barbuda.
Construction workers toiled day and night to finish the structure in record time and according to Browne all will be in place for the first formers, teachers and administrative staff to take their places in the school at the start of the new school year.
Browne says the name of the institution was a fitting tribute to an Antiguan hero.
Sir Novelle penned the words to the national anthem of Antigua and Barbuda.
He also served at the highest levels of government. He was an elected member of the country’s legislative council in 1951, the very year when Antigua and Barbuda gained universal adult suffrage.
Sir Novelle died in 1986 while serving as Governor General’s Deputy.
