DCA Warns Builders Could be Penalized
A former prosecutor for the Development Control Authority (DCA) is warning current and future builders that they risk being penalized for ad hoc construction of buildings.
Attorney Luann DeCosta says the Physical Planning Act # 6 of 2003 requires individuals to obtain permission first from the DCA, before work of any kind is undertaken. She explains that construction must be completed within the three year period given, before it becomes void.
The physical and planning act, she says, also applies to the erection of billboards across the island.
Regarding existing structures to include homes, permission must also be sought from the DCA, before additions are made, even if it is being done to accommodate persons with disabilities.
DeCosta says violators can face penalties if enforcement or stop notices are not adhered to, including demolition and fines.
The demolition cost she says must be paid by the owner of the property.
