There is frank message to Caribbean governments amidst a move by the Trump administration to take an equity stake in some large US companies.

Economist Professor C. Justin Robinson says this move represents a shift in policy for the US, which has long championed free markets.

It is also a sea change in the policy prescriptions for Washington-based multi-laterals such as the IMF and World Bank, which pushed privatization of assets.

Professor Robinson insists this development shows nations in this region owe it to their citizens to craft policies serving local needs and conditions, not distant geopolitical interests.
