FRESH TARIFFS THREATENED BY DONALD TRUMP COULD PUSH UP PRISES IN A&B – ECONOMIST

An economist says Antiguans and Barbudans could also be adversely affected if US President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose tariffs on three of its trading partners.

President-elect Trump says he will hit China, Mexico and Canada with new tariffs on day one of his second term on January 20, 2025.

He says this is part of an effort to force them to crack down on illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the us.

He also says he will be charging China an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs” until it cracks down on fentanyl smuggling”.

Principal of the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, Professor C. Justin Robinson tells ABS News this would likely fuel inflationary pressures, including for Antigua and Barbuda which imports a wide range of goods from the US.
