GOVERNMENT COULD TAKE LEGAL ACTION FOLLOWING LEGAL VICTORY IN US COURT

The Government is contemplating legal action against individuals behind the recent case in a United States District Court, seeking disclosure of confidential banking records.

Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, Maurice Merchant, told Thursday morning’s post cabinet media briefing that the Government will be receiving legal advice on how to proceed.

Judge Jesse M. Furman quashed all subpoenas, dealing a major legal blow to Russian citizen Yulia Guryeva Motlokhov, who had made the filing for disclosure.

She had been seeking confidential banking information for Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne, members of his family and several other individuals and entities in Antigua and Barbuda, stretching back some six years. These were quashed and the judge also ordered the destruction of any of those records which had been produced for attorneys in the case to peruse.
