JAMAICA’S PM DR ANDREW HOLNESS SECURES THIRD TERM WITH REDUCED MAJORITY

Dr Andrew Holness has led his Jamaica Labour Party to a third term in office, following the preliminary count of votes in Wednesday’s general elections. The JLP won 34 seats, defeating the main opposition People’s National Party, which secured 29 in the 63-seat parliament. The preliminary results represented a significantly reduced majority from the 49 seats the JLP secured in the 2020 election. It was in line with the Don Anderson polls, which showed a tight contest, as both parties criss-crossed the island on the hustings.

Holness thanked his supporters in his victory speech at the JLP’s Belmont Road Headquarters in St Andrew. He also declared, “no weapon formed against me shall prosper”, in a defiant riposte to blistering personal criticisms he faced during the campaign.

People’s National Party President, Mark Golding, has conceded defeat and thanked party supporters for their work on the campaign.
