Legislation To Further Protect Public Reputation To Be Tabled In Parliament
The Defamation Bill 2014 will be tabled in the House of Representatives later this month.
According to Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Hon. Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, the bill seeks to promote speedy and non-litigious methods of resolving disputes concerning the publication of defamatory matter.
Benjamin says government believes that there should be the freedom of speech and writing but with some responsibility and within the limitation of the law.
He adds that there will be serious consequences if these provisions are breached.
The bill will also seek to provide effective and fair remedies for persons whose reputations are harmed by the publication of defamatory matter.
