LOWER HOUSE APPROVES GRANT FUNDING FOR GREEN ENERGY PROJECT ON BARBUDA
The government has moved one step closure to making Barbuda an island fully powered by solar energy.
The Lower House on Saturday approved the acceptance of close to 3-million pounds in grant funding from the British Government.
Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne says the grant was negotiated 2017 after Barbuda was decimated by hurricane Irma.
He says this is an example of how slow the process is from a pledge being made to the point of accessing the funding.
The Prime Minister says the project will produce 1 megawatt of solar energy in the first phase with battery backup support added in the second phase.
He says the plan to develop the green energy sector in Barbuda will cost between 15 and 20 million US dollars, which includesan additional 4 million US dollars from the UAE and counterpart funding from the government.
The project is expected to improve energy stability and reduce the cost of electricity on the island.
Prime Minister Browne says the project underscores his government’s commitment to ensuring Barbuda advances in tandem with Antigua.
