Vernon Emmanuel must pay a thousand dollars or face jail time for obstructing a police operation in Ovals last Friday.

Emmanuel pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh in the St. John’s Magistrates Court this morning.

The prosecution says police were attempting to apprehend a wanted suspect who had been evading capture for a long time.

After getting a tip-off the wanted man was at a house, officers hid nearby and sent an informant to call him out.

However, as the suspect came to the door, Emmanuel who had been passing on the street spotted the officers and shouted “Police!”

This alerted the suspect who fled the scene, once again evading capture.

When the Magistrate asked Emmanuel why he shouted, the 55-year-old man admitted he was being mischievous.

He has been given two weeks to pay the fine or will spend six months in prison.

Meanwhile, the wanted man has since been apprehended by the police.
