MAN JAILED AFTER CLAIMING HE WAS TURNING IN ILLEGAL GUN

Ed Archibald of Old Runway has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to illegal gun and ammunition possession.

He was nabbed by police on Saturday during a routine patrol on Thames Street.

The man told the court he was on his way to surrender the weapon under the ongoing gun amnesty, but Senior Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel didn’t believe him.

She said she found it odd that he bypassed the closer Dredge Bay police outpost to supposedly turn in the gun at the main St. John’s Police Station through a back entrance that’s usually closed to the public on weekends.

Archibald was represented in court by Attorney Leon Symister.
