MARINE ECOLOGIST SHARES SARGASSUM OUTLOOK
The marine ecologist who is attached to the National Parks Authority says sargassum seaweed is once again accumulating on the nation’s shoreline.
Sargassum largely originates from the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean before travelling along ocean currents to the shores of the Caribbean, the United States and Latin America.
He says an initial estimate shows the country can expect a significant amount of sargassum to accumulate this year.
Camacho tells ABS, satellite images in December recorded some 3.4 million tonnes of the seaweed in the Atlantic Ocean.
