A leading regional academic says any US military action in Venezuela could stoke a major disruption in trade.

Economist and UWI Five Islands Campus Principal, Professor C. Justin Robinson provided the stark assessment in an interview with ABS News.

He also suggests it could also spark a fresh refugee crisis in the region.

Tensions have ratcheted up in the wake of a US naval build-up in the southern Caribbean, which Washington says is aimed at targeting drug cartels in the region, but the Nicolas Maduro administration in Caracas believes this could be a pretext for regime change.
