‘ONE CASE WOULD BE AN OUTBREAK’ – HEALTH MINISTRY STEPS UP SURVEILLANCE FOR MONKEYPOX
Chief Medical Officer Dr Rhonda Sealey Thomas has unveiled measures to intensify surveillance for monkeypox, a viral disease which causes a rash and fever among other symptoms.
The monkeypox virus, a member of the same family of viruses as smallpox, occurs mostly in remote parts of central and West African countries, near tropical rainforests.
However, it has now been confirmed in Europe, the Americas and Australia.
Dr Sealey Thomas tells ABS News she has sent out notifications to physicians to be on alert and promptly make reports to the Health Ministry.
