PLEA BARGAINING LEGISLATION AMONG MEASURES TO ADDRESS BACKLOG OF CRIMINAL CASES

Legislation to pave the way for plea bargaining is set to be tabled in Parliament in the first quarter of next year.

Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Sir Steadroy Benjamin says this part of major reforms to address a backlog of criminal cases.

He also says a public defender’s department is also set to be introduced as part of the panoply of measures to improve the administration of justice.

Sir Steadroy was speaking at a lecture at the High Court on Thursday.
