Published

Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne has participated in a high-level Oceans Declaration event during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa. He emphasised the existential threat posed by climate change to Small Island Developing States, associated with increased ocean warming, rising sea levels and the prevalence of coral bleaching. He pointed to the critical importance of addressing these issues, both for the livelihoods of citizens and the protection of biological variability.

Prime Minister Browne highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s leadership in adopting nature-based technology to safeguard coral reefs, which act as natural barriers against coastal erosion. This innovative approach not only preserves marine ecosystems but also shields the nation’s shores from the adverse impacts of climate change.

His comments come as the United Nations warns in a new report that the planet is set to warm by a catastrophic 3.1 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
