PM BROWNE SET TO DEMAND SETTLEMENT OF US$10M FROM US LAW FIRM FOR DEFAMATION

Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne is preparing to take legal action against the United States law firm involved in making unfounded allegations of impropriety in the government’s sale of the Alfa Nero superyacht last year. Prime Minister Browne made the disclosure during the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM on Saturday evening, indicating a pre-action letter is to be sent to the law firm “within a week or two” as part of a defamation claim. The prime minister says a lawsuit will be filed in US courts if the law firm refuses to pay a settlement of US$10 million in the defamation suit.

Prime Minister Browne has assembled a high-profile phalanx of about seven attorneys to lead the defamation case.  Several allegations were made against the Prime Minister, as the high-profile law firm represented Russian citizen Yulia Guryeva Motlokhov in a disclosure case.

Prime Minister Browne is also contemplating whether to take legal action against top members of the main opposition United Progressive Party, who he says collaborated with malign actors in the defamatory claims made against him.

Motlokhov had sought disclosure of the Prime Minister’s personal finances spanning some six years, as she claimed, without evidence, that millions had been unaccounted for when the vessel was sold for US$40 million.

A US court quashed all subpoenas earlier this year, in a ruling welcomed by the government as “complete vindication.”
