PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY FOR SUBSEA FIBRE TO IMPROVE INTERNET SPEED, CONNECTIVITY IN A&B

Preparatory work has begun on a project to significantly improve internet speed and connectivity in Antigua and Barbuda.

A team of experts has arrived in the island to undertake a vital marine survey in preparation for a subsea fibre to be landed in Antigua.

The subsea cable will connect Antigua and Barbuda and other countries in the region with the United States, to meet the country’s growing connectivity demands.

The APUA is one of the partners in a regional subsea consortium connecting Aruba, Martinique, Antigua, Puerto Rico and Boca Raton in Florida in the United States.

The new cable will use the latest submarine fibre optic technologies.

The project is known as Caribbean Elite Alliance, or CELIA, and will span over 3,700 km. It is expected to go live in the third quarter of 2027.

Chief Executive Officer, John Bradshaw, says this is positioning the utility significantly upgrade the broadband services in Antigua and Barbuda.
