PRIME MINISTER BROWNE ADVANCES INTERESTS OF SMALL ISLAND STATES AT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne continues to mobilize increased international support for the grave challenges facing Antigua and Barbuda and other small island developing states. The head of government, who is also chair of the Alliance of Small Island States, AOSIS, has discussed key issues with United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS), Her Excellency Rabab Fatima.
The meeting took place during the 77th UN General Assembly under way in New York. Prime Minister Browne congratulated Fatima on her recent appointment. He also discussed priorities for Small Island Developing States including the issue of loss and damage from the impact of climate change. The discussion also centred on the use of a Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) for vulnerable states to have better access to concessional financing and the Fourth UN International Conference on SIDS, which Antigua and Barbuda will host in 2024.
Prime Minister Browne was accompanied to the meeting by Education and Sports Minister, Hon. Daryll Matthew, Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aubrey Webson and Counsellor with the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, Tumasie Blair.
