Prime Minister Says No Job Cuts
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says his administration has no plans to follow CARICOM member state Barbados, and send home public sector workers in an attempt to revive the economy to reform the public sector.
He was speaking at a public meeting of the ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) on Tuesday night. Prime Minister Spencer assures the county and party supports that his government will not embark upon any kind of wholesale retrenchment of government workers.
The Prime Minister has said that retrenchment of works has been an option but he is pleased that his government has decided not to take that route. He told ABS news that he is in no way criticizing the government of Barbados as these are in fact challenging economic times.
The Prime Minister also says that his government sees it as a social responsibility to provide employment for citizens. Late last month, the Barbados government announced a plan to cut public service jobs in a bid to save one hundred and forty three million dollars
