SICKLE CELL STATUS SHOULD BE COMMON KNOWLEDGE

Dr. Belle-Jarvis says in addition to the infants’ results, the screening has also provided very important information as to those in the population who know their sickle cell status.

The Paediatric Department Head says this occurred probably because they had inadequate or no antenatal care.
Inadequate antenatal care is considered as less than eight doctor visits.
Fathers as well are unaware of their status.

Dr. Belle-Jarvis says the aim is for an individual’s sickle cell status to be common knowledge.
She advises couples to seek counseling prior to conception so that the necessary tests can be done to know their status.
