SIR LESTER BIRD RECOVERS AFTER SURGERY

National Hero and former Prime Minister Sir Lester Bryant Bird is now recovering after a lower leg amputation today.
His family tells ABS News this was recommended by his doctor after he had been hospitalized on the 1st of this month at Medical Surgical Associates Centre with a toe infection.
His daughter Donyelle Ann Bird says he had remained under observation given his chronic condition of diabetes.
She explains the infection progressed and an urgent decision was taken to perform the surgery.

His daughter says the family is appreciative of the overwhelming outpouring of support and messages received.
