SIX FINED, ONE REPRIMANDED FOR BREAKING CURFEW
Several motorists who were pulled over during curfew hours last week have been fined for breaching COVID-19 regulations.
Some 16 people were charged after police executed a stop and search operation outside Police Headquarters on American Road last Friday night.
Seven of the defendants appeared before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh in the St. John’s Magistrates Court today.
Jayson Browne, who told the Magistrate he got stuck in traffic while coming from his aunt, will spend three months in prison if he fails to pay his $500 fine.
Ibrahim Alkhoury, who works at a restaurant, must also pay $500. In default, he will spend a month in prison.
Meanwhile, Stacey Chambers who says she got stuck in the police roadblock while heading home must pay $300 or spend a month in prison.
Erol Henry and Amis Pennyfeather have both been fined $200 or month in prison.
Henry says he was taking medication to his girlfriend while Pennyfeather says he was taking a woman to get soup since she hadn’t eaten all day.
The Chief Magistrate reprimanded and discharged Brian Phillip, who says he is a technician and had to be out during the curfew hours to perform urgent work.
The other nine defendants are expected to appear in court tomorrow to answer to their charges.
