Published

on

Simon Springett, U.N. Resident Coordinator for the Eastern Caribbean and Eric Falt, UNESCO Regional Director for the Caribbean, are agitating for swift movement in the Caribbean to further advance recognition and integration of sign language into education. They also say policies affecting deaf people must include their voices and leadership.

The joint statement comes on the occasion of International Day of Sign Languages. They also write, “individuals must be able to communicate in their own language to fully exercise their rights.” The United Nations has pledged its support for the country’s digital transformation framework and UNESCO will also have a “knowledge series on empowering persons with disabilities in Caribbean SIDS”.
