UNITED STATES CONSIDERS CLOSURE OF SEVERAL EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES WORLDWIDE

The Trump administration is reportedly considering closing 10 embassies and 17 consulates worldwide, as part of expanded efforts to reduce federal spending. The New York Times says it has viewed an internal State Department memo outlining the proposed cuts.

While no existing embassies in the Caribbean are among the proposed closures, the State Department memo considers closing the diplomatic mission in Grenada, and moving its portfolios to nearby countries.

The New York Times says, “the closures and other reductions outlined in the document, which is undated, would pare back the American presence on nearly every continent.”

The proposed cuts are in sharp contrast to the previous Biden administration’s efforts to expand the US’ diplomatic presence in the Caribbean. The Biden administration had recommended the return of an embassy to Antigua and Barbuda.
