UPP speaks on ABLP Appeal

The United Progressive Party (UPP) is accusing the opposition Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) of delaying the constitutional process with frivolous and politically motivated appeals.

On Tuesday, the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeals granted a stay, preventing the Government from taking the Constituencies Boundaries Report to Parliament on Thursday.

This decision came days after the ABLP lost an injunction barring the Boundaries Commission from submitting its report of proposed boundary changes, to address inconsistencies in the size and number of constituents within certain areas.

The judicial tug of war continued on Wednesday when the ABLP was unsuccessful in its bid to have the recent registration of voters and publication of a Register of Electors deemed as null, but the party has pledged to appeal that ruling.

UPP Chairman Leon Chaku Symister says his party is simply responding to the onslaught of cases being filed by the opposition mere months before general elections.

He hopes the appeals process will recognize the urgency of swift action and move quickly to dismiss any frivolous, politically motivated appeals filed by a desperate ABLP party.
