WEAPONS AND DRUGS FOUND IN PANDEMIC BARRELS
Comptroller of Customs Ragu Boddu says his department uncovered firearms, ammunition and drugs hidden in some pandemic barrels.
He said they handed over the items to the police for investigation.
The government introduced the relief programme about 16 months ago to assist poor people affected by the pandemic.
It allows people to import essential items including food and clothing at reduced fees.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said people who were not in need had abused the programme.
Boddu reported Customs waived about 4 million dollars in fees through the initiative, which is set to end this month following several extensions.
