WHO ENCOURAGES PREGNANT WOMEN TO BE VACCINATED
The World Health Organization (WHO) is issuing guidance on pregnant women and Covid-19 vaccines.
Dr. Kate O’Brien, WHO Immunization Director, says there’s no reason why a pregnant woman can’t get vaccinated using the vaccines that have been emergency use listed by the WHO. She says there’s no proven increased risk to the expectant mother or the baby and that evidence is still being sought to support the transmission of antibodies to help protect the unborn child.
Chair of Antigua & Barbuda’s National Covid-19 Vaccine Education Committee, Dr. Janele Charles-Williams, continues to encourage pregnant women to speak to their primary health care providers to determine the best way forward.
Meanwhile, PanAmerican Health Organization (PAHO), Director Dr. Carissa Etienne, has reported Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the Caribbean region with more than 400 pregnant women becoming infected in the last week alone. Added to this, 7,000 minors have also become infected.
