WINDIES TRIUMPH OVER PAKISTAN
An emphatic start by the Windies to their quest for World Cup glory. Windies produced a blistering bowling display to make an emphatic start to their World Cup campaign.
The Caribbean cricketers crushed Pakistan by seven wickets at Trent Bridge in Nottingham after electing to field.
The BBC reports that the two-time champions routed the opposition for 105 in 21.4 overs – the Pakistanis second lowest total in World Cup history.
All 10 wickets fell to the West Indies quick and hostile bowling in front of a crowd vociferously in support of Pakistan.
World Cup debutant Oshane Thomas bagged 4-27, captain Jason Holder snapped up 3-42 and Andre Russell brilliantly claimed 2-4 in 3 overs.
Only two batsmen passed 20.
Chris Gayle then smashed 50 from 34 balls with 6 sixes to give the Windies chase a quick start.
Despite 3 victims for Mohammad Amir, the win was sealed with 36.1 overs to spare when the exciting Nicholas Pooran cracked a huge six.
Pooran hit 4 fours and 2 maximums in an unbeaten 34 off 19.
The bowling performance has given the victors added boost in pursuit of their first 50 overs a-side World Cup crown since 1979.
In contrast it was a miserable start for Pakistan who won the Champions Trophy in England just two years ago.
Tomorrow (Sat) New Zealand will face Sri Lanka at 5:30 and at 8:30Afghanistan will challenge defending champions Australia.
The West Indies next match will against Australia on Thursday.
