INDIA STRENGTHENS TIES WITH CARICOM
The first India- Caricom meeting has already produced promising results.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a 14 million US dollar grant for community projects in the Caricom Community.
He also announced another 150 million US dollar line of credit for renewable energy and climate- change related projects from the Indian government.
Chairman of Caricom, St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Allen Chastanet says the meeting was long overdue.
Modi has committed to strengthening relations with Caricom and partnering in disaster management.
He also urged Caricom countries to join the International Solar Alliance and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
A joint task force is also to be set up to decide on the way forward.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
