Tragedy
Police stormed a two-storey building in the capital on Tuesday killing a miner who had earlier shot and killed four people including two police officers. Police said that Deryck Kanhai, a licensed firearm holder had been shooting indiscriminately at people and that when they responded to the report of the shootings, they themselves came under fire. “On arrival at the scene the police found the bodies of Vanessa Williams, a dispatcher at Crown Cab Taxi Service…and a so far unidentified man” lying on the street, the police said in a statement. They said Kanhai, a miner “had apparently gone berserk” and had retreated into his home where a “standoff ensued … as efforts were made to arrest him”. But the police said during the period “there was exchange of gunfire and the use of tear smoke was also employed by the police” and during the standoff, “Lance Corporal 20293 Forde and Constable 18053 Pantlitz were shot and killed by Deryck Kanhai”. The statement said the police subsequently stormed the building and “came under fire from Kanha” and they returned fire fatally shooting him. They said a shotgun, a .32 pistol and a .22 pistol were recovered by the police.
