CARICOM heads Discuss Reparation Issues
Prime Minister the Hon Baldwin Spencer lead discussions in St. Vincent on Monday, on a Special Declaration of Reparations for Slavery and the Genocide of Native people at the two day 25th Inter-sessional meeting of CARICOM Heads.
His report was based on the outcome of the Meeting of Heads of State and Government of Latin America and the Caribbean States CELAC, held in Cuba in January this year.
Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders are now hoping to hold talks with European officials in June on the issue of reparations for slavery and native genocide.
The leaders have adopted a 10-point reparatory justice framework, presented by the Head of CARICOM’s Reparations Commission, Professor Sir Hillary Beckles.
The framework comprises of issues relating an apology as well as matters relating to health, education and literacy, building the cultural institutions and matters concerning a special program for the development of the indigenous people.
The 25th Intersessional meeting of CARICOM Heads closes today (Tue).
