GOVERNMENT SAYS ABWU HAS QUESTIONS TO ANSWER IN SEVERANCE TIFF

The Government has responded sharply to the latest comments from the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union regarding severance payments for former LIAT staffers.
The union has poured cold water on the Government’s announcement it is considering offering 32 per cent severance to the workers, in line with the shareholding it had in the carrier.
The ABWU says it stands by its call for 100 per cent severance settlement for the workers of LIAT (1974) Ltd, and insists this liability falls on the Government of Antigua and Barbuda as a former shareholder, and as the main party pursuing a reconstitution of LIAT.
However, Information Minister Hon. Melford Nicholas told a journalist during Thursday’s post cabinet media briefing, the union needs to respond to key issues.
