Government Says Adequate Attention Will Be Paid To 1735
The government of Antigua and Barbuda will be putting every measure in place to ensure that the country’s lone incarceration facility receives the attention it needs.
Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, Lionel Max Hurst, says government will revisit the way in which prison officers are selected to ensure that each person is equipped with the necessary skills to deal with the high-risk job.
Hurst says that for years, new prison officers undergo a short period of training before they commence work, but the training time … in the estimation of the present administration … is not enough.
The chief of staff says the government is not in a position to build a new prison, but would focus its energy on locking away the very bad and rehabilitating those with petty crimes.
He adds that there would also be infrastructural changes to the prison.
