IMAM YASIN ABU BAKR DIES
Leader of the Jamaat al-Muslimeen in Trinidad and Tobago, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr has died, days after his 80th birthday. The news has been confirmed by CNC3 Television, which says he died in hospital after collapsing at his home. Abu Bakr had been a polarising figure in Trinidad and Tobago. He gained notoriety following the bloody 1990 attempt to overthrow the government, the only such Islamist coup ever attempted in the Western hemisphere. He surrendered after being granted amnesty and spent two years in jail. Others will remember the Imam however as a charismatic religious leader who spoke out against injustice in all its guises.
