WHO RENEWS CALL FOR RICH COUNTRIES TO SHARE VACCINE DOSES
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says if rich countries don’t share vaccines with poorer ones, the world could lose the battle against COVID-19.
Dr Tedros made the comments today at the World Health Organization’s daily COVID-19 briefing.
The Director-General says COVID-19 vaccinations have overtaken the number of reported infections.
He says in one sense that’s a remarkable achievement in a short time.
However, he says the vaccinations are disproportionately distributed with rich countries taking the lion’s share.
He says counties participating in the COVAX facility are ready to receive doses, but none are available.
Dr Tedros calls on rich countries to share vaccines with WHO as soon as they have vaccinated their health workers and older people.
The WHO head also calls on manufacturers to scale up vaccine production.
