Image of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird to Feature on New EC Banknotes
Antigua and Barbuda’s first prime minister and father of the nation, the Right Honourable Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr is among distinguished regional figures whose images are being placed on a new family of Eastern Caribbean banknotes.
Sir Vere’s image will appear on the new $20 banknote, beside another late prime minister, the Honourable Dame Mary Eugenia Charles of Dominica.
The $5 note will now bear the images of the Right Honourable Milton Cato, the first prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenadian Olympic champion Sir Kirani James.
The new $10 banknote will bear the images of Montserrat’s first chief minister and first national hero, the Most Excellent William Henry Bramble and the first chief minister of Anguilla, the Honourable James Ronald Webster.
The $50 note will continue to bear the image of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s former long-serving governor, Sir Kenneth Dwight Venner, with the addition of St Kitts and Nevis’ first national hero, the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewelyn Bradshaw.
The $100 banknote will continue to bear the image of development economist Sir Arthur Lewis, with the addition of St Lucia’s first prime minister, Sir John Compton.
The ECCU stalwarts replace the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and follow extensive consultation across the currency union.
The new notes were unveiled during the 113th meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s Monetary Council in Dominica on Thursday.
