Cabinet Talks of Social Media Ban for U-16s

Government is in the initial stages of a consideration of controlling young people’s access to social media.

During Thursday’s Post Cabinet Media Briefing, Director General of Communications, Maurice Merchant, says a ban for those under 16 is being considered.  The move would follow the ground-breaking move by Australia. Since December 2025, children under 16 have been banned from accessing platforms including TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat.  The UK is also considering a similar move.
