Election Campaigns Postponed
Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council has postponed the start of campaigning for December 13, 2026, presidential and legislative elections while extending the candidate registration deadline to October 31, 2026. The delay comes amid political instability and widespread armed-group violence.
The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) extended the deadline for candidate registration to October 31, from Oct. 9, after the Council of Ministers approved amendments to the Electoral Decree adopted June 2. The decision followed consultations with political actors, the CEP said. The council said the extension would give candidates and political organizations more time to complete the procedures required under the current legal and regulatory framework. The campaign period, which was due to begin Monday, has therefore also been postponed.
