Convicted rapist Lee Martin-Cramp’s legal efforts to overturn his conviction and sentence have ended in failure as he has lost an appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
This country’s London-based highest appellate court dismissed martin-cramp’s appeal, upholding an earlier decision of the Court of Appeal.
The decision by the Privy Council was dated May 11 and received on Monday by Director of Public Prosecutions Anthony Armstrong as he returned from special leave.
Martin-Cramp, the disgraced British police officer, is serving a 15-year sentence in Antigua and Barbuda for rape after having been extradited from Britain.
His extradition was the first time a UK citizen has been handed over to Antigua to face criminal charges.
He met the victim via dating app Tinder while visiting the island for a friend’s wedding in May 2015.
He raped her when they went back to the woman’s apartment to share a bottle of wine and watch a film following a date.
With his appeal now failed, he now has the option of making an application under the Exchange of Prisoners Treaty between Antigua and Barbuda and the United Kingdom.
Under that treaty, he could spend the over 12 years remaining on his sentence in the UK.
Sources close to the matter say this is a major legal victory for Antigua and Barbuda on several levels.
It comes as the Director of Public Prosecutions Anthony Armstrong returns to office from special leave.
