PM BROWNE WARNS AGAINST BEING DUPED BY DEEPFAKE ONLINE SCAM

Prime Minister the Right Honourable Gaston Browne is warning residents about an online scam that uses artificial intelligence and government branding to make a false offer of weekly payments.

The head of government warns, “beware of online scams which use AI deepfakes of public officials to deceive you.”

The fraudsters behind the advertisement ask unsuspecting people to pay XCD$675 to register, and claim they could then receive up to XCD$8,100 per week.

The ad also fraudulently uses the logo of national broadcaster ABS, in a bid to make the offer appear legitimate.

However, members of the public are cautioned against being duped, as no such programme exists.

The content is part of a growing problem involving AI-generated deepfakes.

Similar attempts have been made in the past using other reputable media sources.
