CAN THE COUNTRY WITHSTAND A CATEGORY FIVE STORM

What measures will be taken if Antigua and Barbuda is threatened by a major cyclone this hurricane season?
Cabinet is planning to meet with members of the Barbuda Council next week to discuss the issue.
Hurricane Irma made landfall on the Sister Isle as dangerous category 5 storm two years to the day today.
The hurricane left a trail of devastation, prompting the government to evacuate the residents to the mainland as another storm approached.

In the meantime, Minister Nicholas says technicians from the Department of the Environment also identified some vulnerable areas on mainland Antigua.
It is predicted if a Category 5 storm strikes the mainland, it would trigger a rise in the McKinnon’s Pond; leading to flooding in some areas.

At least 20 people died when Category 5 Hurricane Dorian made landfall in northern Bahamas this week.
Minister Nicholas says the news of the devastation is a stark reminder of the need for a disaster management and recovery plan to be in place.
