CALL MADE TO BUY LOCAL ONIONS

Antiguans and Barbudans are this evening being urged to support local farmers.
Farmers who began planting their onions last year between October and November are now harvesting the crop in abundance.
The problem, the onions are being left to spoil since the demand for the crops has dwindled.
Extension Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture Owalabi Elabanjo says there needed to be a dialogue with farmers in order to prevent an excess in one type of produce.

Elabanjo says the hoteliers were the biggest buyers of local produce and with the Hotels experiencing low occupancy rates, this means they are not buying in the same quantities as before.
He is urging the public to support the farmers before the crops go to waste.
